INFAMOUS EATERIES
Infamous Eateriesby Len Boccassini
The food industry in the United States is an 800 billion dollar a year business. "Eating out" no longer requires a special occasion or an invitation, and is more likely than not, just another option in how we will feed ourselves on a daily basis. Woven into the fabric of our culture, the act of socializing amidst food away from our homes has become commonplace and presents an opportunity few of us would refuse in order to satiate our collective appetites. But as we eat our way through our favorite menus, have you ever once stopped to ponder the history of the structure in which you are seated? Have you ever wondered just how that particular establishment came to be or what acts of treachery may have unknowingly occurred mere feet from your table? At first, this concept may sound preposterous. I am here to assure you it is not. In fact, I'd bet my last bite that you'll be surprised at the number of sordid secrets that are locked away in the pantries of our most popular places to chow down.
Infamous Eateries not only takes an in-depth look at the circumstances surrounding the most notorious events that have occurred at some of our favorite dining establishments, but digs deeply into the history of each site and how it came to be. Along the way, we'll examine the cast of characters and villains who tainted the stew, so to speak. There are names you'll recognize and some you'll wish to forget. I am sure you'll be a bit surprised to discover some of these venues and their not so pleasant pasts. You may even have visited them a time or two. There is one thing, however, of which I am certain - the next time you choose to dine out, your evening will be filled with much food for thought. |

REVIEWS:
Infamous Eateries: An Historical Journey to the Intersection of Infamy and Appetite is an absolutely riveting journey through the history of hostelries, as well as restaurants, organized crime, and dastardly deeds all over the North Eastern United States. The author will take you back in time even to pre-Revolution days to show you how many of today’s favorite eating spots and accommodations have developed over the years and the plethora of violent and evil goings-on that were associated with them. You will recognize many of the characters portrayed in these stories from film, television, and popular culture, but there does appear to be a direct correlation between restaurants and bars and the violent demises of many of the characters involved. This book will make you look again at that favorite eating spot of yours and wonder about the evil events that may have taken place, years ago, within their doors or often just outside the establishments on the notorious New York pavements.
I approached Infamous Eateries expecting a dry, historical recitation of past events. I can assure you it is anything but that, and readers will quickly be caught up in the lives of the real-life participants that author Leonard Boccassini brings to the table. I guess it isn’t surprising that the organized crime aspects of many of these murders and assassination attempts are first and foremost in my mind as I write this review. Those colorful and vicious killers that we have all heard of, like Lucky Luciano, Bugsy Siegel, the Gotti family, and many more families that make up the feared Sicilian Mafia and Chinese Tongs, are all brought to vivid life by the descriptive prose of the author. However, there is plenty of mystery and intrigue to be found in other hostelries all over the New England countryside, and the author has clearly done an expert job of researching and bringing to life many weird, wonderful, and often paranormal mysteries that have unraveled themselves over the centuries. This is a fantastic, lively read, and I am thrilled to see the author is planning further similar books based in other areas of the country. I can highly recommend this read and look forward to more from this diligent and skillful author.
